SL 7000, XPR 7000/3000, SL3500e, XPR 5000/2500 Series Affected

Motorola Solutions changed their MOTOTRBO software support policy for the professional tier radios earlier this year. Essential Services premium software features and standard depot repair warranty for new radios are now provided for five years. It is possible to opt out of the 5 year depot warranty and select 2 years for a small savings.

This change started with SL/XPR 7000 series, XPR 3000 series, SL3500e, XPR 2500, and XPR 5000 series with v2.9 firmware. Premium software features are now licensed for 5 years with a new radio or until any radio shipped prior to v2.9 is still under warranty. Older radios will not accept firmware updates after v2.8 without a licensing fee.

The CP200d, SL300, EVX-261, EVX-S24, CM200d, and CM300d DMR digital radio models are not affected by this change. They could be added in the future but so far it is not clear if it will ever happen.

Most premium software features were purchased a la carte in the past. The most popular are Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Man-Down. Wi-Fi is not a premium feature and must be purchased separately. Below is a graphic showing the complete list of premium MOTOTRBO software features.

What Happens With Existing MOTOTRBO Radio Firmware?

Our standard practice for repairs and preventive maintenance includes upgrading every radio to the latest firmware. We are no longer able to go past v2.8 unless the radio is still under warranty. Starting with v2.10 radios will not accept the new firmware (and new features) unless a license was purchased for the serial number of the radio.

Essential Software Promotion Provides FREE Wi-Fi License Until 6/30

Motorola announced a promotion for customers with existing radios to purchase MOTOTRBO Essential Services before the end of June. As an added incentive a perpetual Wi-Fi license ($125 value) will be included for enhanced “e” models. This will allow WAVE OnCloud interoperability with TLK 100 radios in the near future.

This is a perfect time to send your radios to us for preventative maintenance. We will install the latest firmware, auto-tune your radio to factory specs, enable Wi-Fi if capable, and unlock a 3 year extension for future software releases. We will also archive your programming information. If you have the CPS programming application are able to perform your own updates we can provide a quote for the unlock codes only.
