The new Motorola XPR 3300e and XPR 3500e MOTOTRBO DMR radios can be ordered with a UL certification for use in hazardous environments.

The XPR 3000e series is the lowest cost UL-TIA4950 intrinsically-safe DMR digital radio by Motorola. They support Div 1, Class I, Groups C, D; Class II, Groups E, F, G, Class III; Div 2, Class I Groups A, B, C, D.

A certified radio will include a white UL label and TIA4950 PMNN4490 IMPRES battery. The 2900 mAh Li-ion battery is rated IP68 and uses a new low voltage design rated for up to 29 hours of normal use.

New Features, Faster Updates, and Lower Price

GPS device technology has improved significantly since our Magnum AVL fleet management products were introduced in 2010. Cellular tower infrastructure changes require the replacement of some older trackers this year. We feel now is a good time to upgrade our product offering with new software features, faster updates, and the latest state-of-the-art hardware.

All of our new GPS devices have a backup battery that provides continuous tracking for almost an hour if power is lost. It will also show disconnect and reconnect alerts along with location data while unplugged. The new units also provide alerts for hard braking, acceleration, and direction changes.

Our new units update every 60 seconds plus every direction change providing significantly more data and improved accuracy. Alerts tied to exceeding posted speed of the road are now standard. Our new trackers use the Verizon Wireless network exclusively. Another improvement is a lifetime warranty on the tracker (except the backup battery) as long as the unit’s service plan is current.

Our new hardware is compatible with future driver log requirements, plug-in ECM cables, and other planned software enhancements.

Choice of AVL Fleet and Asset Trackers

We will continue to offer a choice of trackers depending on your requirements. Our MVP260­3W is wired to 12V DC, ground, and ignition. The wiring harness is compatible with 90% of our existing trackers for easy replacement. It has internal antennas, PTO sensor inputs, and the capability for future enhancements.

Our new MVP160­PNP plugs into the OBD­-II port under the steering wheel of most cars, vans, and pickup trucks. It requires no installation and can be moved easily. For permanent installations an optional Y cable is available that hides the unit in the dashboard and provides an open OBD-­II port for service.

For special applications we have GPS devices that track bobcats, pavers, trailers, and other equipment with a 12V DC power source. These units track less frequently ­- 10 or 30 minute updates when moving or daily when stationary.  Battery backup will alert and track if stolen.  We also have battery powered trackers that update every 12 hours for assets without a power source.

Major User Interface Upgrade With Advanced Features

The Amazon Cloud based user interface has been upgraded to provide advanced features and more alerts. All desktop functions can now be done from your smartphone.  We continue to use Google Maps with satellite, traffic, and street views.

Maps are easy to customize with landmarks, geofences, and custom icons. Our software generates 20+ management reports for vehicles, groups, or your entire fleet.  State mileage reports for IFTA class vehicles are supported.

Our data is stored in the cloud for 12 months for easy access.  All reports can be automatically generated and emailed to multiple recipients. You can print reports, download to a spreadsheet, or save to a .pdf file.

Our 1­ minute update service plan is priced at $19.95 per month per vehicle. This is almost half the price of our competitors and we do not require a long term contract. We also offer a seasonal suspend plan to help with cash flow when not working.

JPS Interoperability Solutions has a long history of mission critical radio communications connectivity. The JPS ACU-M interoperability gateway console is an excellent tool to quickly improve in-building coverage for first responders. It is compatible with the JPS ACU-1000 and the ACU-T.

The JPS ACU-M provides interconnection with up to four different 2-way radios, optional 2 VoIP channels, and a local operator handset. Plug-in cables are available for virtually every 2-way radio, satellite, and cell phone in use. The ACU-M can be networked and managed remotely using a computer with the included graphical user interface software.

Set up ACU-M as a Portable Repeater for Communications in Basements

The JPS ACU-M can be installed in a first-arriving command vehicle or waterproof carry case. Below grade basements that prevent RF penetration can be improved using long radio interface cables connected with the ACU-M gateway repeater. By attaching a portable radio to the end of a very long radio interface cable, the radio can be lowered into a tunnel or RF-blocked structure to provide a means of routing the signal in and out of the structure.

Use WiFi Network with ACU-M for Long Distance Radio Interoperability

Using the ACU-M’s VoIP’s option, a radio can be connected using WiFi or an ethernet bridge and a NXU-2A radio interface. The JPS NXU-2A is a device that converts VoIP/RoIP into audio signals compatible with the remote radio. It uses the same plug-in radio-specific cable as the ACU-M.

ACU-M Easy to Deploy – Simple User Interface

The ACU-M is pre-programmed with factory optimized settings for most radio models and manufacturers. Just connect up to four radios with the proper cables and you will be operational in minutes. Touch controls and indicator lights make it easy to patch nets quickly. Remote control software is included too and can be installed on a connected laptop if you prefer.

6/1/16 Update: Raytheon closed the JPS division on 1/29/16 after many years of providing interoperbility solutions. In April, the assets were purchased by Don Scott, one of the original founders of JPS. Key staff and support personnel returned and operations are returning to normal.

Motorola Solutions recently introduced an adapter for remote microphones and Boston Leather fireman straps with clips. Designed for Motorola APX Series P25 public-safety two-way radios, the adapter assembly works with XTS Series microphones too. This accessory has a ring loop attached to the top of the clip for hanging on hooks or the antenna.

You will need the NNTN8271 adapter that replaces the remote microphone clip. Also required is a button clip that snaps to the adapter. Motorola sells the buttons in packs of five (NNTN8749) but we will provide them in a single pack too (MAG-NNTN8749).

The Boston Leather 6542 straps with microphone clips are popular with firefighters and ems personnel. The clip provides a more secure attachment for the larger microphones. They are available in extra-large (6542XL) for tall individuals over 74 inches and  also with reflective safety tape (6542R).

New Low Cost DMR Digital Radio for Hotels and Retail

Vertex Standard started shipping their new EVX-261 DMR digital hand-held radio this week. The radio has 16 channels and can be programmed with analog and digital modes within the 403-470 MHz UHF R1 band. VHF and UHF R2 band is due to ship next quarter.

The radio uses the same universal batteries, chargers, and accessories as the analog-only VX-260 series and the eVerge EVX-530 models. The EVX-261 uses the DMR Tier 2 Standard with TDMA protocol. It supports 2 simultaneous communications paths on a single frequency in digital mode.

Battery life is 9 hours and up to 15 hours when using digital with the optional high-capacity FNB-134LI-UNI. If you are using the radio with a legacy analog system we recommend the better battery. A 700mw speaker provides good clarity and output in noisy environments. Like other Vertex Standard radios, there is a 3 year depot warranty.

We recommend the EVX-261 for a business considering or using FRS/GMRS Talkabout style radios. You will find the audio, range, and battery life superior. Vehicles Over 26,000 lbs Require IFTA Reports

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requires fleet owners with vehicles over 26,000 lbs. to file a quarterly report documenting mileage for each state jurisdiction. Detailed distance data that shows operations with individual vehicle mileage records (IVMR) must be maintained for at least 4 years in case of a state audit.

Magnum AVL fleet management has 20+ web based reports that can be viewed on your computer, exported in csv format to Excel, or saved and printed as a .pdf file. Two of the reports help with IFTA reporting.

Start by Tracking Mileage Using the State Distance Report

The “State Distance” report captures mileage by state for each vehicle, group, or your entire fleet. If only some of your vehicles require IFTA reports, we recommend you set up a group in Magnum AVL for simpler reporting.

Choose any time frame during the previous 18 months or set it up to automatically email the report to your tax accountant.

Many GPS fleet tracking systems provide state mileage reports but that is not enough information if you receive an audit letter from your state. Trip origin, destination, AND route of travel is also a requirement. The Trip Events Report should provide the needed info.

The Trip Events Report is a powerful report that can take several minutes depending on your fleet size and the time period requested. We recommend you choose to email the report and not wait for it online. 

Maintain Quarterly IFTA Backup Data for a Period of Four Years

You should email the reports to a secure server or backup your data so it is available in case of an audit. Magnum AVL server data is guaranteed to be available for report generation for 18 months.

Improved Warranty and IP Rating

Motorola Solutions recently started shipping IMPRES 2 batteries for the APX 6000, APX 7000, and APX 8000 series radios. The new IMPRES 2 batteries are Li-ion chemistry and are more rugged with a IP68 submersibility rating. Battery capacity ratings are larger too but Motorola changed to “typical” from “minimum” that may not result in better performance. There are 3 housing sizes and all IMPRES 2 batteries include a 24 month capacity warranty when used with an IMPRES charger.The PMNN4485, PMNN4486, PMNN4487, and PMNN4494 outlined in blue above are not IS (intrinsically-safe) and can be used with APX 8000, 7000, and 6000. The NNTN8930 and NNTN8921 outlined in yellow are IS (Div 1 & 2) for only APX 6000, 7000. The PMNN4504 and PMNN4505 outlined in red are designed for APX8000XE IS radios for Division 2 only.

We have been told the NNTN7038, PMNN4403, NNTN7034, NNTN7036, NNTN7037, NNTN7037, and NNTN7573 will be cancelled.

New APX IMPRES 2 Chargers Include USB Charging Ports

Motorola has introduced new IMPRES 2 chargers for the new APX batteries. The NNTN8860 single unit AC charger is more energy efficient and includes two USB charging ports. There is a switch to disable the condition/calibration features when needed.

There is also a multi-unit NNTN8844 charger that has six APX radio pockets and six more USB charging ports. Each pocket also has a display for reading battery data. This charger is designed for long term battery storage and has a switch for maintaining batteries at 50% and 75% capacity levels. The first pocket provides additional battery data including IMPRES vs. non- IMPRES charge cycles, potential, rated, and initial capacity.

Vertex Standard announced a new low cost DMR digital radio earlier this year with a display, Micro-USB charger, and 12 hour battery life. The UHF 403-470 MHz model in a black case has been released this month. The yellow case will start shipping in Q4.

Meets IP67 Submersible Rating With Analog/Digital Modes

In addition to the 8-character alphanumeric display, the IP67 EVX-S24 is built to withstand 30 minutes under 3 feet of water. Up to 256 analog and digital channels can be programmed in the radio simultaneously.

The radio transmits 3 watts in digital mode and 2 watts in analog. It is compatible with any brand analog radio and other DMR digital radios.

The radio uses the FNB-V142LI 2300 mAh “cell phone” size battery making it one of the lightest radios at 7.6 oz. The radio is smaller with dimensions of 3.58 x 2.17 x 1.24 inches.

EVX-S24 Audio Accessories Require 3.5mm Threaded Plug

The EVX-S24 uses a 3.5mm threaded audio connector and new belt clip that are different from other Vertex radios. The programming software is new too and requires a CB000262A01 Micro USB cable. Our first impressions are this radio is feature rich at an entry-level price point. Schools, hotels, and now construction companies can migrate to a digital display radio for their on-site communications for under $300 per radio.

The standard EVX-S24 radio package includes the radio, battery, MicroUSB charger and cradle, stubby antenna, belt clip, and 3 year radio warranty.

New Motorola IS Radios Are Now UL Certified

Workers using communications devices in refineries, grain elevators, and fuel storage facilities need an intrinsically-safe certified 2-way radio. Hazardous locations, called HAZLOC, certified radios have a label to identify the NFPA 70 certifications for classifications and groups. Starting 2016, Motorola stopped shipping FM (Factory Mutual) certified radios and transitioned to UL (Underwriters Laboratories). It is important to know FM and UL TIA-4950 intrinsically-safe batteries are NOT interchangeable.

How to Identify FM and UL Certified Radios

Radios with a FM certification have a label with GREEN text and GREEN dot usually on the bottom of the radio. FM certified batteries have the same GREEN label and GREEN dot. In order to be certified, you need two dots with the same color.

UL certified radios have a label with WHITE text and a WHITE dot. APX and XPR 7000 series intrinsically-safe radio fleets delivered before and after 1/1/16 need to make sure the batteries are correct. FM certified replacement batteries will continue to be available for a long time and are safe. Purchasing managers will need to know if FM or a UL replacement battery is required.

APX FM (green dot) batteries include NNTN7033, NNTN7035, NNTN7036, NNTN8092, and NNTN8129.

MOTOTRBO radio users with the thin and light Motorola SL300 ana SL 7000 series can now add a heavy-duty remote speaker-microphone. Our new MAG-SM7-M14 RSM has an internal rechargeable battery that powers a loud one watt speaker and 3.5mm jack for receive-only accessories.

Add the Motorola RLN4941 or our Magnum Original receive-only earpiece with acoustic tube for more discreet communications. For high noise environments, the 3M Peltor dual muff HTM79A and the ProTac III with ambient listening are good choices. Any 3.5mm non-threaded accessory is compatible. ZELLO app users have a variety of choices but not all are compatible with both Android and iOS. For a basic remote push-to-talk button, Android devices require the BT-PTT2-ZD and Apple iOS must use the BT-PTT-U MINI.

There is a combined remote PTT and lapel mic that works with both Android and iOS.  The BTH-300-ZU has a micro-USB charging port, LED status indicator, and a 3.5mm jack to add headphones or receive-only earpiece.

It will provide up to 10 hours of talk time and includes a metal clothing clip. It also includes Pryme’s one year warranty.

Zello users who prefer a wireless speaker-microphone should choose the BTH-600-ZU. It is heavy-duty, IP56 rugged, built-in remote PTT, and includes a 3.5mm jack. There is also a rotating clip, waterproof speaker, and operates up to 40 hours on a single charge. The noise-cancelling microphone coupled with a 3.5mm receive-only headset make it a good choice for loud environments.

There is also a lightweight wireless RSM for Android users. The BTH-SPM100-ZD weighs only 2.5 oz, has a 3.5mm audio jack, and provides up to 16 hours of talk time.

Wireless Accessories for AT&T KODIAK Enhanced Push-to-Talk App

The BTH-600-KU heavy-duty remote speaker-mic and the BTH-300-KU lapel mic offer all the same features as above but are configured to pair with the KODIAK app.

If you only need a remote PTT, the new BT-PTT-U-MINI is the best choice. The velcro strap makes it easy to attach to handlebars, steering wheels, etc. It does not require charging and the replaceable CR2032 button battery lasts 2 years.

It is compatible with both Android and Apple iOS. It also pairs automatically using the app selection setting and remembers the pairing if the battery is replaced.

Wireless Accessories for Motorola WAVE Mobile Communicator PTT App

The Motorola Solutions WAVE app is compatible with the BTH-600-ZU heavy-duty speaker-microphone and the BTH-300-ZU lapel microphone. Both devices are programmed to pair with either Android and Apple iOS devices.

The lightweight BTH-SPM100-ZD RSM is compatible but will only pair with Android devices. At only 3″H x 2″W x 0.6″D, it includes a 3.5mm jack, pairing light, and belt/clothing clip.

The 16 hour battery will provide talk time for long shifts without needing to find a USB charger.

WAVE users who need only a remote PTT can select the BT-PTT-Z MINI for either Android or Apple iOS.

Motorola APX P25 and MOTOTRBO DMR radio users working in high noise environments can now use 3M Peltor hearing protection. There are 14 headsets certified in a variety of styles with up to 26dB NRR. All are optimized for digital and carry a 12 month warranty.

Direct Connect Headsets

Direct connect headsets do not require an adapter and include the push-to-talk button on the earcup. The RMN5137 over-the-head style provides a 25dB noise reduction rating. RMN5138 behind-the-head version offers 24dB and can be worn with headgear. There is also the RMN5139 with clips for hardhat attachments. All have noise-cancelling boom microphones.

Headsets Using Nexus PTT Radio Adapter

Standard headsets with Nexus plugs use the PMLN6095 APX/MOTOTRBO adapter. This PTT cable is not compatible with the ComTac III or SWAT-Tac models that require NATO wiring. Specs are identical with the direct connect models and the same style choices are available – PMLN6088, RLN6477, or the RMN4051.

Listen Only Headsets With 3.5mm Connectors

Motorola offers listen only headsets with both threaded and non-threaded plugs for use with remote speaker-microphones. Most RSM’s with a 3.5mm jack require a non-threaded accessory plug. The RMN4055 (headband), RMN5132 (Neckband), and RMN5133 (hardhat) are the most popular.

The exception is the NNTN8383 RSM with an industrial noise-cancelling (INC) microphone. The 3.5mm threaded jack is located on the the cord.

The RMN4057 with hardhat attachment and threaded plug is the correct choice. For headband style and 3.5mm threaded connector choose the RMN4056.

TacticalPro Headsets with Ambient Listening

3M Peltor TacticalPro electronic headsets include small microphones on the ear cups to pickup surrounding sounds for increased awareness and safety. The TacticalPro works great in environments with harmful impulse noise because it instantly block harmful sounds. It also will amplify low sounds to a comfortable level when needed. These headsets also use the PMLN6095 Nexus radio adapter and are available in all 3 styles – RMN4052, RMN5135, and RMN4053.

The Motorola 3M Peltor Cross Reference Chart shows all of the Motorola certified headsets and the associated 3M Peltor part numbers. The headsets are optimized to work with APX 8000, APX 7000, APX 6000, APX 4000, APX 3000, and APX 1000. MOTOTRBO radios include the XPR 7000 and XPR 6000 series.

Nexus adapters are also available for Motorola XTS 5000, XTS 2500, XTS 1500, PR1500, PR860, HT1550, HT1250, HT750, CP200, and CP185.
